Tutorial 1. Bootstrap and Workstation

Create the app​

npx create-expo-app@latest field-guide
cd field-guide

This gives the tutorial a modern framework-led starting point and keeps the early focus on product architecture rather than low-level setup overhead.

Lock in team defaults​

Document immediately:

  • package manager
  • Node version
  • environment naming
  • branch and release conventions
  • iOS and Android identifiers

Verify the machine​

node --version
npm --version
adb devices

On macOS for iOS work:

xcodebuild -version

Decide when to move to development builds​

Use Expo Go to explore quickly. Move to development builds once the app needs custom native libraries, app links, push parity, or production-like native configuration.
