Deep Linking and App Routing
Deep links are one of the cleanest ways to test whether an app has a coherent navigation architecture. If the same destination can only be reached from in-app taps and not from external entry points, the routing model is incomplete.
Canonical route contract
Every serious React Native app should define:
- route names
- path structure
- required parameters
- optional parameters
- deprecated route behavior
- versioning strategy for link formats if needed
The route contract should be stable enough that backend systems, emails, push notifications, and support tooling can rely on it.
App states to handle
A link may arrive when the app is:
- cold-started
- in memory but backgrounded
- already active
- mid-auth flow
- pointed at stale or partial local state
Routing logic has to behave correctly in all of these states.
Auth-aware routing
Links into protected content should define:
- whether auth is required
- what happens if the user is unauthenticated
- how post-login continuation works
- whether permissions or feature entitlements also gate access
The link target should be resolved after auth state is known, not by guessing at startup.
Navigation architecture
Use one routing resolution layer that:
- parses the inbound URL
- validates required parameters
- resolves auth and feature gating
- maps to the canonical navigation tree
- reports failure states for analytics and debugging
Avoid multiple independent deep link handlers attached to different screens or features.
Failure modes
Plan for:
- missing parameters
- expired content
- deleted records
- unsupported app version
- links opened by the wrong account
- links that require a new binary or a feature flag
The app should handle these with explicit fallbacks instead of dead-end errors.
Observability
Track:
- link opens by source
- failed resolution rate
- auth-redirect rate
- completion rate after open
- mismatched-account events
Deep link quality is easy to overestimate unless the resolution funnel is visible.
Team rule
If a route matters to the business, it should be represented as a real contract, not as a side effect of a particular screen component.
Use this with Push Notifications and Messaging and Feature Flags and Remote Config.
