Decision Records and Governance
Large React Native programs need durable decision-making. Without written records, teams repeat architecture debates, reintroduce rejected tools, and make upgrades harder than necessary.
What to record
Use lightweight architecture decision records for choices such as:
- workflow selection
- navigation standard
- server-state strategy
- analytics event schema model
- native SDK integration approach
- release and OTA policy
ADR structure
A useful ADR usually includes:
- context
- decision
- consequences
- rejected alternatives
- owner and date
Example ADR topics
- Why the app uses a framework-led workflow.
- Why one state library was chosen over two others.
- Why notifications are wrapped behind an internal service.
- Why OTA updates are restricted to a subset of changes.
Governance model
Define:
- who approves breaking platform changes
- who owns dependency policy
- how exceptions are requested
- which standards are mandatory versus recommended
Why this matters
Governance is not bureaucracy for its own sake. It reduces accidental fragmentation and makes architecture understandable to future teams.
